Modern facility:Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurating the Cyber Forensics and Digital Analysis Centre of the Kerala Police in the city on Saturday.

2009 Dec 06, Thiruvananthapuram: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Saturday said that certain radical groups were recruiting educated youths proficient in information technology for building an international network of operatives sympathetic to their causes.
Inaugurating the Cyber Forensics and Digital Analysis Centre here, the Minister blamed Central intelligence agencies for not being as forthcoming as expected when it came to sharing intelligence on matters of State and national security. He said the Union government seemed to be violating the very principles of active intelligence sharing it constantly stressed in its regular interactions with various State police departments.
Mr. Balakrishnan said the number of cyber crime cases reported in Kerala had increased from 40 in 2008 to 69 in 2009. In the country as a whole, there was 53 per cent increase in cyber crimes.
The Cyber Forensics and Digital Analysis Centre was set up by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). It will provide forensic expertise and training to police officers investigating cyber crimes. It will train judges and prosecutors in digital forensics for effective administration of justice in cyber crime cases.
The centre will be a repository of modern cyber forensic tools used for analysing digital devices, including the latest BlackBerry and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) phones, involved in crime cases.
The Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had granted Rs.1.68 crore for the project.
Additional Chief Secretary, Home, K. Jayakumar, CDAC director Rajan T. Joseph, Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose, Inspector General of Police Tomin J. Thachankery, Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander, IG Administration Ananthakrishnan and DIG Administration K. Gopinath were among those present.
